In the same year, the Lugo Family built an adobe house where the current county courthouse sits today. In 1839, the Lugo's colonization permit was granted for 18 leagues of land. Lugo's proposal was to colonize the San Bernardino area, listing 27 prospective settlers. Instead, the governor approved a settlement plan by Antonio Maria Lugo. Governor Juan Bautista Alvarado rejected the application. Ygnacio Palomares, applied for the right to graze cattle in the eastern San Bernardino Valley. In 1837, Antonia Pico and Andres Pico made an application for the land, but it was rejected. The Cajon Pass was used by many early explorers, settlers, and traders going to places further west.Īfter the Mission system was dismantled by the Mexican government in 1833, several prominent Southern Californians attempted to acquire Rancho San Bernardino. Kit Carson and a group of trappers went through the Cajon Pass in 1830. This route ran along the course of Crowder Canyon to its mouth at Cajon Canyon and down to the mouth of the canyon at Sycamore Grove. This route was known to the vaqueros of the San Bernardino de Sena Estancia who had come to the aid of Armijo's party with food. Their route entered the San Bernardino Valley by a route Armijo called "Cañon de San Bernardino" from the upper Mojave River west through Cajon Pass and down Crowder Canyon and then Cajon Canyon. The expedition of Antonio Armijo first established the trade of the Old Spanish Trail between Nuevo Mexico and Mission San Gabriel in Alta California in 1829–1830. Jedediah Strong Smith entered the valley with 15 trappers in late November 1826 on the way to Mission San Gabriel, crossing over the San Bernardino Mountains by the Mojave Trail route over Monument Peak. The site would later be known as "Old San Bernardino." Today, the site is historically known as the "San Bernardino Asistencia." The site was closed when Governor Figueroa closed down the mission system in 1834. The Mill Creek zanja, an irrigation ditch from Mill Creek to the site, was dug by local Indians for the Franciscans. A group of adobe buildings were constructed around 1830. In 1819, the San Gabriel Mission created an estancia, the San Bernardino de Sena Estancia, at an Indian rancheria called Guachama, the site of which is in modern-day Redlands, California, and Rancho San Bernardino. That year Politana, the first Spanish settlement in the San Bernardino Valley, was established as a mission chapel and supply station for travelers on the road into California from Sonora, by the Mission San Gabriel in a ranchería of the Guachama Indians that lived on the bluff that is now known as Bunker Hill. The traditional (since there is a dispute as to the following events) founding and naming of San Bernardino is that Padre Francisco Dumetz, a Franciscan priest, made a trip from the Mission San Gabriel Arcángel to the San Bernardino Valley on May 20, 1810, the feast day of Saint Bernardino of Siena during California's Mission Period. Missionary priest Father Francisco Garcés entered the valley in 1774, as did the de Anza Expedition, though not in present-day San Bernardino but further south. Spanish Military Commander of California Pedro Fages probably entered San Bernardino Valley in 1772. The Tongva Indians also called the San Bernardino area Wa'aach in their language. They lived in villages of ten to thirty structures that the Spanish named rancherías. At the time the Spanish first visited the valley, approximately 1500 Serranos inhabited the area. They lived in small brush covered structures. They have lived in the valley since approximately 1000 B.C. They were known as the "Yuhaviatam" or People of the Pines. San Bernardino's earliest known inhabitants were Serrano Indians (Spanish for "people of the mountains") who spent their winters in the valley, and their summers in the cooler mountains. San Bernardino, California, was named in 1810.

These songs are ghosts they leave no footprints. Instead, Maroon 5’s music just slips past me, into the ether. I don’t have that kind of energy for them. Their songs aren’t distinctive enough to inspire hatred. When it comes to Maroon 5’s actual songs, though, I have the rough equivalent of face blindness. I would probably recognize Adam Levine if he was standing right in front of me. They’ve dome something right, and there are people in the world who appreciate their efforts. Early in their career, Maroon 5 hit upon a sort of agreeable, easy-to-ignore blue-eyed-soul thing, and they tweaked that formula over the years, somehow riding the zeitgeist and usually staying somewhere near the top of the pop charts. Adam Levine spent a long time on a popular TV show where the whole premise was that he’s a pop star helping other singers on their way to pop stardom. They’ve sold millions upon millions of records. I’m not sure I’ve ever met a Maroon 5 fan. But I feel pretty safe, since I don’t think Maroon 5 fans are the belligerent, gun-toting type. If this mythical person demands to hear more Maroon 5, then it’s been an honor to write this column for all of you, and I’ll see you on the other side. I’ll be like, “ This! Love! Has! Take-en con-trol! Of me!” Then I’ll kind of trail off for a few seconds and look beseechingly at my would-be assassin. If I’m ever in one of those hypothetical situations where someone puts a gun to my head and demands that I sing a Maroon 5 song, I think I’ll make it out of there OK. In The Number Ones, I’m reviewing every single #1 single in the history of the Billboard Hot 100, starting with the chart’s beginning, in 1958, and working my way up into the present. "In the years that followed, Kaylee Sawyer's Estate filed litigation against the College and three of its administrators. Last Friday, with the assistance of a mediator, the parties have reached a settlement calling for the payment of $2 million to the Estate and termination of the litigation. Sawyer's family and friends, and shook the Bend community. "On July 24, 2016, twenty-three-year-old Kaylee Sawyer was abducted and brutally murdered on the campus of Central Oregon Community College (COCC) by a former campus public safety officer. He noted that in previous years, students, professors and Bend Police Chief Jim Porter had told COCC officials that the campus Public Safety Department “was acting outside of their legal authority and that tragic events could result.” He said the school even paid for an internal safety audit that recommended major changes to the conduct and appearance of the campus public safety officers.īut “COCC did nothing,” Williams said, still equipping their officers with police-like uniforms, pepper spray, ballistic vests, body cameras and handcuffs.ĬOCC issued a statement Thursday morning on the settlement: “This tragedy was not unforeseeable,” family attorney Tim Williams said of Sawyer’s killing. That was a key element in legislation known as Kaylee’s Law, signed a year ago, that was sought by her father and stepmother, Jamie and Crystal Sawyer, and sets out standards for campus security officers and their vehicles, to better differentiate them from police officers. The case was scheduled to go to trial in September.Īmong other claims, the lawsuit, amended earlier this year, alleged the college failed to do an adequate background check on Lara and was providing officers with uniforms and vehicles made to resemble police. It also alleged several state law claims, from assault and battery to professional misconduct and wrongful death. The federal civil rights lawsuit, filed against the college by Sawyer's family a year after her killing, also named Lara, then-COCC President Shirley Metcalf and other officials. He later was sentenced to life in prison for a murder that rocked the Central Oregon community. Lara soon fled the area, then abducted a Salem woman, who drove him to California, where he was caught and arrested the next day. He took her to a secluded spot, where he raped and fatally bludgeoned her. The 23-year-old had been offered a ride by Edwin Lara, on July 24, 2016, in his police-like patrol car that had a “cage” separating the front and back seats, and doors that could not be opened from the inside. (KTVZ) – Nearly four years to the day after Central Oregon Community College student Kaylee Sawyer was brutally murdered by a security officer on the Bend campus, the school has agreed to pay $2 million to settle a federal civil lawsuit for its role in her killing, the family’s attorneys said. VanCleave said they hope to expand the program out of state, to give children more books.īEND, Ore. She said the family plans to use part of the settlement to continue KK's Readers, a program she started that provides books for kids in head start and early education programs. They will never come out and say they had a role, but I think the settlement award that we got says it for them.” "So in a way, I feel like they were acknowledging their role in this. “There's a cap that can be awarded, and COCC paid more than what that cap was," VanCleave said. The extradition process is still in the works and Lara’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 16.VanCleave said her family was awarded over the amount of the cap, and she believes in part that it's COCC's way of taking accountability for their role. Timeline of events in the Edwin Lara case “Mr. Lara will remain here, will remain a prisoner here with no bail and that will allow the authorities in Oregon to collaborate with who they choose to secure his transportation if they want him there,” said Joseph Allison, assistant DA for Siskiyou County. The 31-year-old entered the not guilty plea to all California charges. Lara is also being held on a fugitive from justice hold out of Deschutes County where prosecutors charged him with murder, plus California charges of assault with a firearm and making threats to terrorize. Those charges are all for an alleged crime spree in California after Kaylee Sawyer was killed. (KOIN) - Edwin Lara, the man accused of killing Kaylee Sawyer, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment in California Friday afternoon for attempted murder, kidnapping, carjacking and assault with a firearm. Although now removed from its hidden subterranean temple, it still evokes the mysterious and ancient world of Mithraism. Mithras Slaying the Bull was a devotional icon used during the seven stages. The seven stages were Raven ( Corax), Nymph ( Nymphus), Soldier ( Miles), Lion ( Leo), Persian ( Perses), Runner of the Sun ( Heliodromus), and Father ( Pater). This quasi-apathetic objective aimed to purify and transcend the followers through seven stages of initiation to reach an ultimate spiritual goal.Ī very loose comparison to Nirvana in Buddhism could be proposed. There are a few references to the trials that mystai endured to develop control over their emotions and feelings similar to Stoicism. As a result, little information is documented. Participation in the mystery religion was limited to initiates ( mystai). Little is known about the rituals and ceremonies of Mithraism that surround Mithras Slaying the Bull. Hence such a simple detail of roughly hewn rocks in the background of Mithras Slaying the Bull indicates the artwork’s location, its narrative, its symbolism, and its manufactured source material. They also rendered the cosmos with their darkness and obscurity. Like a womb, they represented the origin of life. Therefore, caves as Mithraea (plural of Mithraeum) were steeped in symbolism. Moreover, it was inside a cave that Mithras lured, captured, and slew the wild bull. Mithras was born from rock deep within a hidden cave on December 25, and it is not a coincidence that Christianity later supplanted Mithraism with Jesus having the same birthday. The cave walls of a Mithraeum are echoed by the cave walls of Mithras Slaying the Bull, but they also echo the narrative of Mithras too. Eating bread and drinking wine were regular events that occurred around a centrally-placed icon such as Mithras Slaying the Bull. Inside a Mithraeum is where followers would stage and perform their devotional acts. This type of dedicated cave was known as a Mithraeum since it was essentially a Mithraic temple. Followers of Mithras would congregate in hidden caves found naturally in the countryside or created artificially in the urban underground. They are depicted as the decorative background of roughly shaped rocks. Detail.īehind the storytelling and action of Mithras are cave walls. Mithras Slaying the Bull, 150-200 CE, Cincinnati Art Museum, Cincinnati, OH, USA. Mithras Slaying the Bull allies with its target audiences through its ethnicity, clothing, and violence. With his Phyrigian cap atop his head symbolizing his freedom, Mythras stabs the wild bull with his knife. The unknown artist tailored the frieze towards the greatest supporters of Mithraism who were Roman military members. The carved frieze also presents Mithras in Roman military garb with his cape and tunic compared to his mythical nakedness. Mithras Slaying the Bull depicts the beautiful young god as ethnically similar to its target audience: city-dwellers of Rome. However, despite his origins, Mithras is not depicted as an Indian or Persian person but as a Western European with his very Roman classicized face. He was an Indian-Persian god who blended Eastern and Western beliefs on glorifying war, overcoming evil, and achieving salvation. In the top central area of this frieze is the protagonist himself, Mithras. Map of the Roman Empire at the death of Emperor Trajan in 117 CE. We cannot wait for Schaitkin’s second novel, Elsewhere, to hit shelves in June 2022. The fateful encounter sets Claire on an obsessive quest for answers - not just about how her sister truly died, but about who she really was. Years later, a now adult Claire is still haunted by Alison’s unsolved death when she crosses paths with one of the men originally suspected of murdering her sister. The case captures media headlines as two local men are arrested and charged with murder - but with little evidence against them, they’re eventually released. Days later, Alison’s body turns up in a nearby cay. On the final night of the holiday, however, Claire’s older sister Alison disappears. The novel opens on the Caribbean island of Saint X, where young Claire and her family are enjoying a luxury beach vacation. Much like Little Fires Everywhere, the novel weaves together themes of grief, obsession, and privilege into a riveting narrative of family trauma and healing. Little Fires Everywhere is a very good read: Everything I Never Told Youis just a better read.Īdd your email on the right for the latest on books!įeel free to share on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.Alexis Schaitkin’s debut was a New York Times Notable Book of 2020, and it’s easy to see why. I recommend that you read both these books. With Little Fires Everywhere, you will root for a couple characters, but you won’t think of them as much nor give their future’s but a moment’s thought as you close the last pages. Even the conclusion of the book is more thoughtful and skillfully wrought than in her latest novel. You’ll understand their failures and triumphs more fully, and you’ll hope for a better future for them all. You will remember the characters and the story longer and feel more invested in the lives of the characters. But they don’t know this yet,” but it also keeps you hooked with the question of what really happened to Lydia and why did this happen. Not only does it hook you with the opening lines, “Lydia is dead. The skill and subtlety of the author drawing these characters and having them live their story is more artfully displayed.įinally, Everything I Never Told Youis just a more enjoyable book with greater emotional impact. Throughout the novel, the characters are dynamic they change and grow. In contrast, Everything I Never Told You has an entire family, and a neighbor, with complex, well-rounded personalities. Even Elena Richardson, one of the principle characters of the novel, feels a bit type-cast. However, the Richardson father and, in many ways, the older son, Trip, are both rather flat. Little Fires Everywhere does have Mia and Izzy, both vibrant, interesting characters. It reminds us how easily old hurts can resurface years after first appearing.Īlso, the character depth and development in the earlier novel is more robust. It shows the depth of these feelings and how they must be considered throughout a lifetime. It shows how some issues, including race, popularity, and opportunity, never really go away. However, the previous novel presents the interracial issue with many more layers we see its impact on the Lee family throughout the entire book. In this latest novel, the issues feel like a plot device to move the story along and juxtapose the views of the characters, specifically Elena Richardson and Mia Warren. In Little Fires Everywhere, the racial drama concerning the adoption of a Chinese baby, and the decision about which woman has more right to raise that baby, feels less intense and genuine than the manner similar issues were dealt with in her previous book. Without spoiling either story, let me detail three reasons why the earlier book is superior.įirst, the interracial issues that are a part of each book are handled with more depth, impact, and precision in Everything I Never Told You. Little Fires Everywhere, by Celeste Ng (Penguin). The little fires of the title refer primarily to tiny pyres that Izzy, the youngest of the four Richardson children, sets alight on the beds of her. However, her lesser-known, 2014 release, Everything I Never Told You, is an even better book. So, we gotta know: Who started the fire ( Billy Joel already insisted it wasn't him). Firefighters deem the events a clear-cut case of arson. The book opens with the Richardson family's picture-perfect house in Shaker Heights, Ohio burning down. It is a good family drama and will satisfy many readers. Little Fires Everywhere begins at the end. Landing on most of the best of 2017 reading lists is Celeste Ng’s Little Fires Everywhere.
